Are you a stay at home mum or dad who could do with some mental stimulation and some extra cash for the kids, the family, a new car or a holiday? Or maybe you're a grandparent fed up with twiddling your thumbs in retirement? Does the idea of doing something once and getting paid multiple times sound appealing?

Now, you might think I'm crazy, but how about the idea of writing and publishing children's books to make some extra cash?

Why books as a business?

A few years ago I asked a successful entrepreneur why she bothered to write books when she was already earning good money from giving seminars and ran a successful coaching business as well. "Well," she said, "it's about the passive income. I write a book once and get paid over and over and over again, every time someone buys it, without me having to do anything more. That beats swapping my time for money any day, which is what I do in my coaching business! With my books, once they're published I get paid while sleeping, while cooking the family meal, while I'm on holiday. And I'll keep getting paid for as long as people continue buying them!"

That sold me on the idea, so I went looking for how I could create passive income from writing. Yes, even though I’m a dyslexic male who failed English at school, and now in my sixties, I thought I'd at least check it out. I'm an open-minded guy, if nothing else!

When I looked at the whole book market, what stood out to me was children’s books. No, not Harry Potter – I mean the little books you read to your kids before bedtime. These books are short, and the English is fairly basic. (Which is great for me, being dyslexic, like I said!)

If, like most parents (and grandparents!), you read to the kids, then you're already at an advantage since you know what kids like. Plus you were a kid once yourself and probably had books read to you in the past. What were your favorite ones? Why have those books stuck in your memory? And I bet you've even thought to yourself when reading some kids' books, this is awful, I’m sure I could do better than this.

So to answer the question about what you'd write about, how about you involve your kids in coming up with some ideas for the next children’s blockbuster? And if you don’t have kids or yours have left home, I’m sure you know someone who wouldn't mind if you entertained their young ones for an hour or so, making up stories, while they have some time to themselves.

You could play a game with the kids, get them to think up ideas for a book - fun stuff, situations, characters. It doesn’t matter how silly they seem - they won't be stranger than talking steam engines, talking cars, cats in hats, owls that deliver mail……

Talking of Dr Seuss (the cat-in-the-hat man), did you know he was born in 1904 and earned over 76 million dollars in his lifetime from writing and publishing skinny little books that kids of all ages adored? Many decades after he published “Green Eggs and Ham” his books, movies and merchandise are still generating an income – in fact, a new TV series was just released on Netflix in November 2019. Now that is a true passive income for his family!

I’m not suggesting you can be or want to be the next “Dr Seuss” but it goes to show that even what, on the surface, seem like silly little books can make more than a comfortable income for their writers and publishers.

I can still hear you thinking things like: but I can’t write, what will I write about, I don’t know how to start, I know nothing about books and publishing! Well, don’t worry, there’s an answer to all those concerns.
